Charles Tremayne Hired as Executive Vice President of Programming
June 30, 2009
Cineflix Productions today announced another senior appointment with the hiring of Charles Tremayne as Executive Vice President of Programming. Tremayne will oversee Cineflix’s factual programming in the UK and USA. He will also open and head up the company’s New York office.
Tremayne, who spent the last two years at RDF USA, will take up the role in July. He came to the United States in 2000 after working at the BBC and Granada, where he was the award-winning Executive Producer of the long running current affairs series World in Action, as well as numerous other titles including daytime strip This Morning.
In America he headed Granada’s joint venture with The New York Times, started Airline on A&E, created Room Raiders for MTV, co-created the long running First 48 for A&E, and was executive producer of numerous other series for Discovery, TLC, HGTV, truTV and PBS. At RDF Tremayne ran their east coast production base which included ABC’s Wife Swap, Discovery’s Detonators and Arctic Roughnecks, and was co-producing Fugitive Chronicles for A&E. In 2002, he won an Emmy as executive producer of a NOVA on bioterrorism.
“I have greatly enjoyed my time at RDF but this exciting opportunity takes me back to my roots in factual programs” said Tremayne. “I have watched Cineflix grow from being a small Canadian producer to becoming one of the leading production companies in the world. It is the right time to join a forward looking company at a pivotal moment in their growth.”
Tremayne’s background in factual programs goes deep. As a producer at World in Action, he played a leading role in the campaign that eventually freed the Birmingham Six. He was involved in numerous other investigations before becoming executive producer of the series, and subsequently Controller of Current Affairs and Documentaries at Granada. In that period he oversaw the long running Savage Planet series for PBS and launched Tonight with Trevor McDonald, Britain’s first news magazine show. He also worked with leading directors Michael Apted, on the long running 7 UP series, and Paul Watson on several award-winning documentaries, including Barbara and Malcolm, A Love Story.
Tremayne will be reporting to Cineflix President of Programming, Simon Lloyd. Lloyd said, “Charles is a truly outstanding individual with an exceptional track record in creating and producing hit shows in the UK and North America. His range and depth of programming experience and his creative vision are truly impressive as is his personal and professional integrity. Charles will be joining a senior creative team that must now rank as one of the strongest in TV.”
